Therapy

Small steps. Meaningful progress.

Every child’s communication journey is different.

Some children may need support with speech sounds. Others may find it difficult to understand language, put their thoughts into words, communicate with others or feel confident expressing themselves.
At Words & Wonders, therapy is tailored to the individual child — their strengths, needs and goals.
You don’t need to know exactly what your child needs before getting in touch. We can start by talking about what you’ve noticed and what you’re hoping to understand.

How I can help

I support children with a range of speech, language and communication needs, including:

Speech sounds

Supporting children who find particular sounds difficult or whose speech is harder for others to understand.

Language development

Supporting vocabulary, sentences, grammar, storytelling and expressing ideas.

Understanding language

Helping children understand words, instructions, questions, concepts and conversations.

Social communication

Supporting interaction, conversation, turn-taking, play and communicating with others.

Stammering & fluency

Supporting children who experience repetitions, prolongations, blocks or other differences in the flow of their speech.

Communication confidence

Helping children communicate their needs, share their ideas, join in and feel more confident being heard.
If you’re concerned about something that isn’t listed here, please get in touch. You don’t need to have the right words to describe what you’re seeing.

Understanding your child's communication

Assessment comes first
Before deciding what therapy should look like, I take time to understand your child’s communication and the things that matter to them.
Depending on your child’s needs, this may involve:
🍃 Talking with you about your concerns and your child's development
🍃 Gathering information from school
🍃 Observing your child's communication and interaction
🍃 Using formal or informal assessment activities
🍃 Looking at both strengths and areas where additional support may be helpful
Assessment isn’t simply about identifying difficulties. It’s about building a picture of how your child communicates, what they can already do, where they may need support and what will help them move forward.
Following assessment, I will explain the findings clearly and talk through the options and recommended next steps with you.

A therapy plan made for your child

There is no standard programme that works for every child.

Once we understand your child’s needs, I create an individualised plan with clear, meaningful goals.

Depending on those goals, therapy may include:

🍃 Games and motivating activities
🍃 Books and storytelling
🍃 Speech sound practice
🍃 Vocabulary and sentence-building activities
🍃 Listening and understanding tasks
🍃 Conversation and interaction activities
🍃 Visual supports
🍃 Structured practice
🍃 Activities linked to your child's interests

Some sessions may feel very playful. Others may involve more focused or structured work.

The balance is guided by your child, their goals and what will help them learn best.

What might a therapy session look like?

Every session is planned around your child’s individual goals, so there isn’t a set formula. A session might include:

Connecting and settling in

Time to reconnect, check in and get ready for the session. This might happen through conversation, a familiar activity or something your child enjoys.

Working on specific goals

Activities are chosen to target the skills your child is currently developing.

Practising communication

Children have opportunities to use their developing skills in activities and interactions, rather than simply practising them in isolation.

Following their interests

Your child's interests can help create motivating opportunities to communicate, participate and learn.

Reviewing progress

I keep track of how your child is progressing and adapt therapy as their needs develop.

The aim is for each session to have a clear purpose while still feeling engaging and manageable for your child.

Your therapy journey

01

Get in touch

Tell me a little about your child and what has prompted you to seek support.
02

Let's talk

We’ll have an initial conversation to understand your concerns and discuss whether Speech and Language Therapy may be appropriate.
03

Understand

If an assessment is recommended, we’ll explore your child’s communication strengths and areas where they may benefit from support.
04

Plan

I’ll talk you through the findings and, if therapy is appropriate, agree meaningful goals and a plan tailored to your child.
05

Grow

Therapy begins, progress is reviewed regularly and the approach is adapted as your child’s skills and needs develop.

Working together

Communication doesn’t stop when therapy ends
Parents, carers and school staff all play an important part in supporting a child’s communication.
Where appropriate, I work collaboratively with the adults around your child, sharing relevant information, practical strategies and progress. This might involve liaising with:
🍃 Parents and carers
🍃 Teachers
🍃 SENCOs
🍃 Teaching assistants
🍃 Other professionals involved in your child's care or education
The aim is to help the people around your child understand their communication needs and feel confident supporting them in everyday situations.

Small steps matter

Progress doesn’t always look like a big milestone. It might be:
A new sound
A new word
Asking for help
Understanding an instruction
Joining a game
Sharing an idea
Taking part in a conversation
Finding a new way to communicate
Feeling more confident being heard

Every child is different, and progress will look different too.
Every step forward matters.

Wondering if Speech & Language Therapy could help?

You don’t need to have everything figured out before getting in touch.
If you’ve noticed something about your child’s communication that you’re unsure about, tell me what you’ve noticed. We can start there.
